Tax Deduction?
/Did you know that you may get a tax deduction on some costs related to purchasing and owning a service dog?
Medical expenses are a common thing to deduct on your taxes; included in this category are guide dogs and other service animals.
The IRS allows the costs of the following activities to be included as medical expenses:
- Buying: how much you paid to receive your service dog (The tax year of acquisition)
- Training: how much you spent training your service dog
- Maintaining: how much you spent caring for your service dog on a daily basis, such as money spent on food, veterinary care, and grooming (Yearly)
Publication 502: Medical and Dental Expenses - See source link below next to the "Source"
The IRS defines those who are able to use a service animal as people who are visually impaired, hearing disabled, or physically disabled in any other way. The person can be yourself, your spouse, or a dependent.
Of course we here at BBCOC are not accountants or financial advisors, so we highly recommend checking with your accountant. We also recommend documenting, documenting, documenting. Keep records and receipts of everything from training to grooming. Any little bit of a deduction that you may qualify for is a plus!
